                                   MTThF 9:00-9:50  SAT 130

Prerequisite:
Math 78  (with a C or better), appropriate score on the assessment exam or demonstrated competency.  Prerequisites ensure that students entering this class have an adequate background to efficiently learn the material in the class and that they have a reasonable chance of success.

Course Goals:
Intermediate algebra is a course covering the basic tools and fundamentals of algebra. The topics include rational equations, linear equations, systems of equations, inequalities, absolute value, radical expressions and equations, quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic equations. The topics will emphasize the idea of functions, function notation and the graphs of the functions. Throughout the class students will learn to recognize and express mathematical ideas graphically, numerically, symbolically, and in writing.  They will become self-regulated learners and help other students become cooperative learners.

Text:
INTODUCTORY and INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA; Marvin Bittinger, Addison Wesley. Chapters 7-12 will be covered with some material from Chapter 6 included.

Materials:
A graphing calculator is required for this class. The TI-83 Plus is recommended. All in-class demonstrations will use the TI-83 Plus. Regular college-ruled notebook paper should be used to work problems and graph paper is required for all graphs. All homework should be in a notebook separate from your class notes. Colored pencils may also be very useful.
